Romero’s resume doesn’t just include zombie PR. Pittsburgh horror enthusiasts (who honed our obsessions under the spirit of his craft) know that he created other terrifying worlds that didn’t even involve the living dead. Let’s perpetuate our hero worship together and chant “All Hail Romero” as we take in two different-flavored suburban nightmares (both released in 1973!) that deserve just as much attention.
Season of the Witch (1973) – The bored, suburban housewife is one of horror’s most prolific muses; here, Romero imagines that one named Joan might get so frustrated with her god-awful husband and ho-hum life that she decides to turn to witchcraft. After finding out that a new neighbor is a not-so-secret witch, Joan’s curiosity about the occult eventually fuses with her frustration and shakes up her routine in increasingly bizarre ways.
The Crazies (1973) – Don’t drink the water, there’s homicidal rage in it! The military accidentally leaked a biological weapon into the Evans City water supply (oops), and the townspeople are now coming down with a bad case of the murder flu, followed by an acute bout of death. Romero would later further explore his distrust for the military in Day of the Dead, but this precursor is especially dark. Don’t miss it!
