FAUST (1926)  –  Live Electronic Score by Stephan Haluska

Experience F. W. Murnau’s monumental 1926 silent-film classic Faust with a spellbinding new live score by Cleveland experimental musician, harpist, and improviser Stephan Haluska.

Haluska transforms the film itself into an instrument. In real time, custom software analyzes Faust’s shifting images, tracking motion, pixel contrast, and other visual details, to generate and shape synthesizers and audio effects live in sync with the screen. The result is a vivid, immersive encounter where Murnau’s shadows, spectacle, and supernatural dread become sound.

Known for work at the crossroads of electronic music, improvisation, and science, Haluska is Managing Director of Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project (CUSP) and teaches electronic music at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Case Western Reserve University. His performances invite audiences into unfamiliar sonic worlds—and this is a rare chance to experience one of silent cinema’s great visions as a living, breathing audiovisual event.
