This observational documentary paints an incredibly nuanced portrait of Pahokee, a small rural town located in the Florida Everglades. The tightly knit community struggles with financial insecurities and a bleak future, but as four local high-school students embark on their senior year, they feel the pressure of Pahokee on their shoulders–the community has placed all hopes for opportunity on them, the next generation. Directors Lucas and Bresnan moved to the Everglades and filmed daily for years to capture the intimate and delightful moments of these four teens’ lives leading up to graduation day. Complex and multi-layered, PAHOKEE is a culmination of the remarkable rapport the filmmakers have achieved filming within the Pahokee community, and the result is a poetic window into a unique town’s loving identity and a powerful representation of those often left behind by political discourse.
