It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… but in this tale of two cities, it is fully just the worst of times. In the golden era of schlock and sleaze, New York City and Los Angeles were always portrayed as lawless hellscapes filled with psychos. This double bill of two very literally-titled movies will take you on a bi-coastal tour of urban sex and violence!

The Driller Killer (1979)
This is a movie about puppies that love rainbows. Sike! It’s a movie about a guy losing his mind and taking it out on everyone with a drill! Abel Ferarra wrote, directed, and starred in this infamous video nasty. He plays Reno, a starving artist in 70s NYC who is short on luck, as well as funds for the rent and utilities. His girlfriend doesn’t get him and there’s a punk band who won’t stop loudly rehearsing when he’s trying to paint. Naturally, his only recourse is to take a giant drill and start killing people with it!

Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988)
Look, we don’t know what to tell you that you can’t glean from the title, but here goes: A small-town girl has gone missing in Hollywood, but the detective assigned to find her keeps getting sidetracked by the city’s ever-growing problem of murderous ladies of the night. Can you guess what their weapon of choice is? This masterpiece of camp and sleaze, directed by Fred Olen Ray (owner of what has gotta be the world’s most wild and prolific filmography), is a must-see for genre nerds. Oh, and one last thing: LINNEA QUIGLEY. Enough said.
